During both World Wars, German Americans experienced discrimination nationwide. In Michigan, German-language books burned, German names on street signs changed, and some German Americans were violently assaulted. The German Americans residing in Frankenmuth, however, were able to escape much of that discrimination—retaining their German identity and celebrating it in the postwar period.
