Introducing the New Michigan History Alliance® Grant Program

LANSING, Mich.— The Historical Society of Michigan (HSM) has announced a new grant program available to history organizations in Michigan. HSM will award the new Michigan History Alliance® (MHA) Grants in amounts ranging up to $2,500 to nonprofit, city or tribal HSM member history organizations that have annual operating budgets less than $250,000.

The program is intended to provide grants for small- to medium-size historical organizations in Michigan through straightforward applications and reporting. Applying for an MHA Grant should be simple enough that a volunteer can write it in a couple of hours. Many grant programs require extensive preparation and reporting—so much so that smaller organizations have little realistic chance of seeing their proposals funded because they are competing with larger organizations with professional staffs of experienced grant writers. Moreover, many grant programs focus their funding on large, new programs, whereas smaller organizations often need money for more basic needs.

“Support for local history organizations is one of our central missions,” said HSM Executive Director and CEO Larry Wagenaar. “We are excited for the opportunity to assist our small- to medium-size member historical organizations in their work to preserve and interpret Michigan’s history.”

HSM will accept grant applications until 5 p.m. on Friday, December 16. Grant awards will be announced in January 2023.
