Ford Airport: “The Nation’s First Modern Airport”

Ford Airport operated in Dearborn from 1924 to 1947 and has been called “the first modern airport in the United States.” Indeed, the airport pioneered the use of paved runways, radio guidance, airmail, passenger airline schedules, and a hotel airport. Home to the factory that made the iconic Ford Tri-Motor airplanes, Ford Airport also had the world’s only privately owned mooring mast, built to dock the huge dirigibles of the early twentieth century.

The Railroad King: James F. Joy

James F. Joy of Detroit covered more than 715,000 square miles of the Midwest with railroads—several lines of which are still in use today. But “The Midwest Railroad King” did not stop there; Joy also helped build the Soo Locks, served as a University of Michigan regent, cofounded the Detroit College of Medicine, and won a pivotal court case with the help of Abraham Lincoln. Join us to learn about this towering figure in Michigan history.
