MAJOR GRANT FROM MEIJER ALLOWS HISTORIC SOCIETY OF MICHIGAN
TO UPDATE TRAVEL GUIDE
September 17, 2007- Traveling the historic sites of Michigan just got a lot easier. The Historical Society of Michigan today introduced its 2008 Edition of the Historic Michigan Travel Guide. The Guide is available at the 92 Michigan Meijer stores and many booksellers across the state.
Meijer, the Michigan based supercenter retailer, provided the funding to allow the Historical Society of Michigan to update its Travel Guide after nearly 30 years since its last edition. By selling the Guide, Meijer hopes to get this valuable tool into the hands of Michigan customers and visitors alike as they travel across our state. The Guide provides key information travelers need to know about hundreds of historic locations, including operating hours, admission fees, highlights of exhibits and collections.

"Michigan's rich and diverse history makes it an ideal place for people of all ages and interests to visit and explore," said Governor Jennifer M. Granholm. "The Historic Michigan Travel Guide is a great source of information for anyone planning to visit Michigan's museums and historic attractions."
Meijer donated $30,000 to the Historical Society to fund the production of the new guide. The company will also be donating the proceeds of all sales of the Guide to the Historical Society of Michigan to fund this ongoing biennial publication. It will also assist in the Society's ongoing work to document Michigan historical organizations that are featured in its reference volume, the Michigan History Directory, which is published in alternating years with the Travel Guide.
"Michigan is our home and it is filled with interesting and exciting places that help us all recognize the history and the value of this great state," said Fred Meijer, Chairman Emeritus of Meijer, Inc. "Meijer is proud to support the work of the Historical Society of Michigan and hopes you enjoy this Guide as you travel the state to discover its beauty and its history."
"Cultural and Heritage Tourism plays a big role in Michigan's economy. Our new Guide will help connect visitors with our state's historic destinations," said Larry J. Wagenaar, Executive Director of the Historical Society of Michigan. The Historical Society of Michigan is the states' oldest cultural institution, dating back to 1828.
