February 14, 2012 – National History Day Receives National Humanities Medal from President Obama

National History Day (NHD), a year-long academic program focused on historical research for 6th to 12th grade students, was awarded the prestigious 2011 National Humanities Medal by President Barack Obama at a White House ceremony on Monday, February 13. Dr. Cathy Gorn, executive director of NHD, accepted the award on behalf of the NHD staff, board and honorary advisory council, and the state affiliate programs.

January 19, 2012 - Local History Conference Marks 54th Year March 30-31, 2012 

The 54th annual Michigan in Perspective: The Local History Conference will be held March 30-31, 2012 at the John Lewis Center at Macomb Community College (South Campus) in Warren.

January 16, 2012 - HSM Presents Statewide Michigan Studies Conference for Educators

The Historical Society of Michigan presents Mulling Over Michigan, a statewide Michigan studies conference aimed at educators. It will take place February 9, 2012 at the Monroe ISD Professional Development Building.

January 9, 2012 – HSM Hires Staff Members with Help of Kellogg Grant

In 2011, the Historical Society of Michigan (HSM) was awarded a major grant by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Designed to help the Society more fully engage minority and underserved communities in the appreciation of Michigan’s history, the grant has enabled the Society to hire two new employees to assist with that goal.

September 6, 2011 - Historical Society of Michigan Launches New Website

The Historical Society of Michigan (HSM) has launched its new website at www.hsmichigan.org. This is the first full redesign that the site has undergone since 2001.

June 18, 2011 – Nordberg, Iron County Historical Museum Win Prestigious U.P. History Awards

Erik Nordberg and the Iron County Historical Museum received the Historical Society of Michigan’s top awards for the preservation of Upper Peninsula history at the 62nd Annual Upper Peninsula History Conference.

June 16, 2011 – Michigan Students Win Top Honors at National History Day

Michigan students experienced great success at the 2011 National History Day Contest, which took place June 12-16 in College Park, Maryland. A record nine Michigan entries advanced to the final round of judging at this year’s event.

May 2, 2011 - 2011 Michigan History Day State Champions Announced

More than 115 Michigan elementary, middle, and high school students received top honors at the Michigan History Day State Finals on Saturday, April 30.
