The Monthly Meeting of the Elk Rapids Historical Society will feature The Lincoln Image, a presentation by Dan Packer. 2009 is the bi-centennial of Abraham Lincoln's birth. Celebrations and commemorations are being held nation wide. The Elk Rapids Area Historical Society is pleased to welcome DAN PACKER to Elk Rapids for the first time to present his program: "The Lincoln Image." The Plymouth [Michigan] Historical Museum houses the state's largest Abraham Lincoln collection. Dan is currently on the Plymouth Museum's Board and also volunteers in its archives. He is a greeter/docent in the Lincoln Room and is also a member Abraham Lincoln Bicentennial Committee for the State of Michigan. PACKER's Power Point presentation will show unusual and interesting images of Lincoln; both period and contemporary. This presentation is free for Elk Rapids Historical Society Members. For Non-Members, a $5.00 donation for adults, $1.00 donation for students (under age 18) is requested at the door for these programs. Children are free. All proceeds benefit the Elk Rapids Area Historical Society.

Please join the Fishtown Preservation Society for a special evening of Fishtown at its mid-summer best. The evening will feature Leelanau wine and beer, appetizers and desserts featuring Fishtown's own Village Cheese Shanty and Carlsons of Fishtown, dockside theater presentation of classic films and photos of Fishtown, shanty then-and-now histories, dockside tug tours, historic preservation experts, live music and silent auctions for exclusive cruises. Support the fishing shanty you love the most. Among many other ways to help, you and your family may "purchase" the restoration of a door or window, stabilization of a foundation, shingles for part of a roof, dock pilings or hemlock dock boards or a general donation to the building or fish tug of your choice. July 31, August 1 & 2: Houghton Lake

Join the Houghton Lake Historical Society for a 2 1/2 day festival of the History of Houghton Lake, Our Historical Village which consists of 13 historical buildings re-creates life in an late 19th logging Village in Northern Michigan. We have costumed enactors, traditional crafts, music and other entertainment. The lynchpin of the Village, the historical schoolhouse and museum has a school marm waiting to tell visitors about the school of the era, our Dressmakers shop has valued treasures of women's apparel of the time. We have a general store, a homestead and doctor/pharmacy/barbershop. We also have a working print shop and blacksmith shop (with a smithy and printer working on site). Friday evening we will host a pig roast with a evenings music with Banjo Picker and Friends and story telling by Genot Picor. We have traditional food for sale and a ice cream parlor in our historical playhouse. You can attend the events all weekend for the very low price of $5 for those over 12. Children 12 & under are admitted free.

Join the Elk Rapids Historical Society for a presentation by Dr. Charles Cleland. Dr. Cleland's presentation is entitled Confessions of a Museum Curator. Dr. Cleland, is a retired Professor of Anthropology and Ethno-History, Michigan State University. He has done many archeological digs in Northern Michigan. This presentation is free for Elk Rapids Historical Society Members. For Non-Members, a $5.00 donation for adults, $1.00 donation for students (under age 18) is requested at the door for these programs. Children are free. September 18: Elk Rapids

Dr. Ted Ligibel, Director of Eastern Michigan University's Historic Preservation Program, returns to Elk Rapids, along with his fall class of Historic Preservation Graduate Students to present "Elk Rapids: A Heritage Area?". Hear how Dr.
Ligibel introduces the students to "finding and unraveling the mysteries" behind Elk Rapids' Cultural Landscape. Find out what is a Heritage Area, a Cultural Landscape, and how it relates to preserving the Village's Community Character.
In June 2006, Dr. Ligibel presented a program for the Elk Rapids Area Historical Society : "Community Character: What's Up With That?" He filled the Historic Township Hall. So much interest was sparked, that a group of local citizens formed a Community Character Council. Action taken by this Council resulted in the Village of Elk Rapids winning the 2008 Michigan Municipal League's Region 6 Community Excellence Award for the Village of Elk Rapids Community Character Counts Project. This presentation is free for Elk Rapids Historical Society Members. Elk Rapids Area Historical Society's Annual Meeting will occur on October 22 and will be followed by a presentation entitled "Docks, Bridges & Didjanos" by Glenn Neumann. At 6:00 p.m. the Annual Meeting and potluck supper will begin(bring a dish to pass, that's your admission). Come see the Past in Motion with the Northwest Michigan Engine & Thresher Club, at the 42nd Annual Buckley Old Engine Show! There will be exhibits and events that are fun for the whole family!
