The 2009 Abrams Genealogy Seminar, "One Step, Many Solutions", will be held Friday, July 17 and Saturday, July 18 at the Library of Michigan in Lansing. The event will feature genealogist and creator of the One-Step Web pages, Stephen Morse as the keynote speaker. His appearance is co-sponsored by the Eaton County Genealogical Society. Topics covered will include discussions of the extensive resources available in the Abrams Foundation Historical Collection at the Library of Michigan and overviews of genealogical and historical collections at selected libraries and archives from across the region. The Bay County Historical Society is offering a field trip to the nation's biggest gathering of railbuffs on Saturday, July 25th. Tickets are now on sale. Train Festival 2009 is America's Largest Celebration of Railroading and will include 8 steam locomotives under steam, vintage and modern diesel/electric locomotives, various train rides, huge model train layouts, art exhibits and much more. Our bus excursion will leave from the Historical Museum of Bay County for a full day of fun. Tickets are now on sale for $60 per person, $100 per couple. Plans are underway for a great time at the 17th Annual Depot Day celebration! The day will kick off at 10:00a.m. with entertainment, food, historical displays and many surprises. The day will end at 5 p.m. with a Raffle Drawing with three gasoline cards as prizes. The main focus of the day is to draw attention to the Historical Depot and the Lake Odessa Museum Complex.

Join the Society for Historic Preservation for their "Fashions from Past to Present" event, which will showcase fashions from what was chic in the Civil War period to what is considered chic today. The show will include not only ladies' fashions, but also gentlemen's fashions. Refreshments will be served, and a Silent Auction will also be held. Tickets are $10 each. Summer is in full swing in mid-Michigan and plans are taking shape for the Michigan State University Museum's annual Great Lakes Folk Festival, Aug. 7-9 in downtown East Lansing. The Great Lakes Folk Festival showcases the traditional cultural treasures of the nation's Upper Midwest and a sampling of the best of traditional artists from around the country and the world. The festival encourages cross-cultural understanding of our diverse society through the presentation of musicians, dancers, cooks, storytellers and craftspeople whose traditions are rooted in their communities. The Ionia County Genealogical Society will host Escanaba based author/songwriter Bill Jamerson on Saturday, November 14 at 1:00pm. Bill will present an hour-long program of songs and stories about the Civilian Conservation Corps. The program includes reading excerpts from his novel Big Shoulders, showing a clip from his PBS film, and playing original songs he wrote about the CCC with his guitar. In celebration of the Capital City's 150th birthday, the Michigan Women's Historical Center is launching a special exhibit, entitled Creating a Community: The Early Women of Lansing. The exhibit focuses on the achievements of 19th-century women, detailing their courageous efforts to establish themselves in their professions in the early years of the community. Visitors can now view the exhibit at the Michigan Women's Historical Center and Hall of Fame at 213 W. Main Street, Lansing, Michigan. For more information visit their website or call (517) 484-1880. The Center is open Wednesday-Friday Noon-5:00 p.m., Saturday Noon-4:00 p.m., Sunday 2:00-4:00 p.m. The Center is closed on major holidays. The Midland County Historical Society presents "Tales from the Circuit Court", featuring the history of Midland's Circuit Court and related personnel. It will also examine interesting court cases represented in the time span 1857 to 1946, and show how court case documents enrich our understanding of local history and beyond. A celebratory opening ceremony is open to the public on March 24 from 6 to 8 pm. For the duration of the exhibit, entry is included with admission to Heritage Park: $5 for adults, $3 for children; FREE to Midland County Historical Society members. Come visit the Albion Historical Society's newest exhibit entitled "The Roaring 20's: An Era of Change". This exhibit highlights important events in Albion during the 1920s as well as showing many of the businesses that made Albion what it is today. The exhibit also has many pictures of the Albion high school classes from the era. The exhibit will be introduced with an open house on May 23rd from 12-4pm. Refreshments and snacks will be served. Dress in 1920s attire if you wish and be sure to mention the word Purple Gang to enter the speakeasy.

Architectural photography will be the focus when The Alden B. Dow Museum of Science & Art at Midland Center for the Arts presents five exhibitions opening June 6 and running through July 19. These exhibitions include Building Images: Seventy Years at Hedrich Blessing (on display through August 2), Frozen Music: Frank Gehry and the Walt Disney Music Hall, Materializing the Immaterial: The Architecture of Wallace Cunningham, Sharpening the Focus: Alden Dow through the Lens of Elmer Astleford, and Midland - The City of Architecture: A Photography Exhibition. These exhibitions can be viewed during Museum hours: Wednesday, Friday and Saturday, 10 am to 4 pm, Thursday 10 am to 6 pm, CLOSED Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, and CLOSED June 28 through July 5. Tickets are $8 adult and $5 student; FREE to Museum members. Ticket price includes admission to all Museum exhibits, including Hall of Ideas. The Frankenmuth Historical Association currently has an exhibit entitled: Lincoln, the Civil War, and Frankenmuth. This is an exhibit with a local and national theme that explores Frankenmuth in the turbulent 1860's and celebrates the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln's birth. Many interesting artifacts, photos, and informational historical documents are included. This exhibit will be featured in the Leona Geyer Gallery until July 5. The Ella Sharp Museum of Art History presents their newest exhibit, "The work of John James Audubon: American Artist and Naturalist." This is the only time this exhibit will be in Michigan. The exhibition traces Audubon's life and development as an artist. On exhibit are originals by Audubon, including oil paintings, a drawing and watercolors with his field notes and much more. This traveling exhibition is from the John James Audubon Museum and State Park in Henderson, Kentucky. It was organized and is being circulated by Art Services 2000 Ltd. The Ella Sharp Museum will feature portions of the Andrews Gallery of Wildlife Art in the Audubon exhibit. Admission to the Museum during the John James Audubon exhibit is $8.
